2017 New Rules for Air Cargo Transportation of Lithium Battery

The No. 58 Dangerous Goods Rules came into force on January 1, 2017. In this update, the requirements of lithium battery in terms of marking, label and document have changed greatly.
 
 
 
 
 
 
(1) New lithium battery mark

Figure 1 has been adopted by the United Nations as a general mark for lithium battery transportation by sea, land and air

Operation precautions
 
 
 
Note 1: When the package contains lithium battery cells or batteries with different UN numbers, one or more lithium batteries must be marked with all applicable UN numbers.
 
 
 
Note 2: Pay attention when pasting the lithium battery label!
 
 
 
It is specified in PI965-970 Part II Additional Packaging Requirements that the package size must be large enough to accommodate the lithium battery mark and can be pasted on the same side without folding.
 
 
 
(2) New lithium battery danger label
 
 
 
From January 1, 2017, for lithium battery goods that need to be labeled with Class 9 lithium battery dangerous goods, the Class 9 lithium battery dangerous goods label (right) shall be pasted, and for other Class 9 dangerous goods, the Class 9 miscellaneous dangerous goods label (left) shall be pasted.
 
 
 
However, the old Class 9 hazard label can be used until December 31, 2018. That is to say, in the transition period of 2017-2018, lithium battery goods and other Class IX dangerous goods can still be labeled as shown in the left figure.
 
 
 
 
 
(3) Documents attached to lithium battery
 
 
 
All requirements of PI965-970 Part IB and Part II related to attached documents have been deleted.
 
 
 
"Each consignment must be accompanied by a document, including the following contents, indicating:
 
 
 
·The package contains lithium ion battery cells or batteries;
 
 
 
·The package must be handled with care. If the package is damaged, there is a risk of fire;
 
 
 
·If the package is damaged, special procedures shall be followed, including inspection and repacking when necessary;
 
 
 
·Phone number for additional information. "
